Soi
i rarely have anything bad to say about thai food. it is my favorite cuisine and the biggest reason why i enjoy going to thailand so much (shopping’s only second!). whenever i see local thai restaurants i haven’t tried before, i make a mental note to visit, and make sure i do so very soon.
i wanted so badly to fall in love with SOI. their slogan “eat thai, love thai” totally reeled me in and all the nice reviews i’ve read in the last few months pointed to nothing but lovely meals at affordable prices. boy was i disappointed.
john and i dined at their greenhills branch one rainy day, when we were both famished and craving for some good food. i just recently got him hooked on thai food (he never even tried it before we met!) so we were both looking forward to a new discovery. we ordered the tom yam gung, beef in red curry, and bagoong rice. the soup was quite tasty and lovingly enjoyed by us both, but the two other dishes were just blah. worst of all, both the beef and the pork in the rice were too tough to chew, making our whole dining experience more stressful than pleasurable. even the thai iced tea was a bit of a letdown.
perhaps it was just a “bad cooking day” for those dishes, or maybe it was just that particular branch with sub-par standards, or, you know… excuses, excuses. i tried to think of them all. but in the end, it was simple: we were chewing on food we didn’t like, and for a rather steep price.
would we come back for a second try? well nothing in life is impossible, but…probably not.
