just last night, in the midst of a crazy dinner out with five girlfriends and a spontaneous debate on the recyclability of fashion trends, a friend turned to me and asked, with slight irony: do you think elephant pants will ever come back in style again? for a moment i stood there puzzled, seemingly unable to grasp the question directed at me. not because i didn’t understand it, but because the immediate thought that came to mind was that they never really went out of style. seconds passed with images of myself flying past my eyes in a weird flurry of color and prints, all donning some reincarnation of the wide-leg trouser in the last few years. in the end i just gave her a smile and a soft chuckle (perhaps the confused look still left on my face), and was relieved by the change-of-topic initiated by another member of our group. it wasn’t that i was embarrassed to admit to having been enamored by the palazzo since, i don’t know, high school? — but rather that i was glad i did not have to explain to her how bizarre i found the question.
