paris fashion week: disturbing/inspiring
when it comes to runway fashion, i find that there is a very fine line between these two adjectives. most designers really dare to be different, and in so doing, end up with outrageous looks on the models. some are so wonderfully unique and avant-garde that you get a rush up your spine just by looking at them… while others are, i’m sorry to say, not quite as tasteful. but you gotta admire their courage though, to try things that haven’t yet been done before.
but in almost all cases, you really would either love them… or absolutely hate them.
i loved emanuel ungaro‘s collection. it was filled with lovely grays and pinks, and i was crazy about the flowy pieces that blended soo well together. i am totally inspired to come up with an outfit with the same overall look.
of course, there were darker (and slightly mind-boggling) collections, like this one by dai fujiwara (for issey miyake). i am feeling slightly suffocated right now, but on the upside…
there were some pretty inspired pieces that i really liked, as well.
the dior collection really stood out for me, and at first i couldn’t decide whether i liked it or not. eventually though, i kind of fell in love. it was totally barbie-esque with the outfits and the ginormous hair… and i was soo into the whole smoky/sultry eye effect.
there’s malibu barbie…
corporate-badass barbie…
and i-love-colors-so-much-i-let-swallow-me-whole barbie. (seriously though, i really love this gown.)
the viktor & rolf collection gave a whole new meaning to ‘making statements’.
i love love love karl lagerfeld‘s androgynous runway looks. he makes black and white not only a classic, but fabulously exciting as well. it’s right up his alley, i think, and i just adore the tuxedo bows. (do you think i can get away with the double-bow look?)
about a handful or so of junya watanabe‘s models looked like this as they walked down the runway. all i can do is heave a deep sigh and say, poor girls. (but if you ignore the face masks, you’ll see that the clothes are actually rather interesting, like the jacket in the second picture.)
“aahhh! i’m being swallowed by a giant brown marshmallow!”, from the martin margiela collection.
this one made me smile a bit… only because polka dots are my faaaavorite.
tsumori chisato is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite designers. i love her little ‘experiments’ with prints and colors and shapes.. they’re just always so refreshing to see and you can’t help but be inspired. every. single. time.
giant hats flailing about at the yohji yamamoto show…
there was a carnival feel to the vivienne westwood collection, which i found rather interesting. hers was probably the most colorful (and outrageous) of all, and i must say, there were plenty of things to love. (i am so crazy about those hats!)
the face/body paint was indeed bordering on disturbing; however, i realized later on i quite liked them (they’re sort of like the freak-shows in carnivals). of course, they are not to be imitated for your day-to-day make-up, which, in turn, allows you to be a bit more appreciative of extreme runway looks.
i am absolutely swooning over this bag, mainly because it reminds me that i am capable of a little diy..
overall, it was an exciting week for fashion in paris. them brilliant designers are really bringing it, eh?
